But... he thinks he understands a little better how they mean it when they say it in the wake of the beat in his chest, and maybe they can understand him a little better too, even in his quiet he gives them in turn. Not indifference, not malice. But an intentional gesture, in substitution of speech.
Despite everything, he doesn't regret knowing them. )

And before, when I said don’t change who you are, I meant… don’t change who you are for us - or anyone. Unless you want to. Only if you want to.
I worry that you’ll be pressured by our love. But I also know you’re strong enough to say no.
That said, I’ll love you forever, but the shape of it might change.
