[He doesn't dislike tabibito-san, though. So maybe he'll play along a little.]
Nothing I need forgiveness or absolution for, if you are concerned for the state of my soul. There simply are deeds I've committed, necessary, but undoubtedly unclean in the eyes of the gods.
[Matoba's not exactly a religious man, so getting into the weeds of Shinto vs the various Buddhist intersections of death myth aren't exactly his forté here (in AU), but...]
[He's pretty sure "murder" is considered an unclean act by any theology.]
Don't think I need to be "cheered up", if you are reading into it as gloom. I simply think it's best to be honest with yourself about who you are and what you do.
None of us are clairvoyant. You can only take the course of action you think is best in the moment and have the confidence to move forward whatever the outcome. I find regrets rather unnecessary, so I tend not to think in terms of 'worth' and simply observe at the results to adjust if needed.
I dislike useless actions. Is that the answer you wanted, tabibito-san?
The ones who are kind but know better than to be kind.
The ones who hate but know that they shouldn't.
The ones who feel regret but continue to make the same mistake again and again.
To me, they are the thing I want to see and study the most. The problems I want to fix. But, probably, people like that cannot be fixed. Their natures rule them, no matter how many times it injures them.
I think that is the most interesting sort of person.
[ it probably says something about hani that they can read these words and find only bright interest, surging curiosity. the flags are red, so red, but so lovely all at once. ]
The problems you want to fix…
But it sounds as though it would be more interesting if you broke them instead?
Hahaha. Maybe. But if I were to break them, I wouldn't be forcing a different conclusion.
They were going to break themselves eventually, anyway.
I think it would be a good outcome if they were able to become useful to themselves. Easy-to-use things are nice to have, but there's nothing special about them. Challenges are much more enriching.
A different conclusion. That sounds rather hopeful.
Hmm.
The would your ultimate challenge be someone who refuses to be fixed, but also refuses to break despite the crumbling trail they’ve left in their wake?
Endlessly struggling, and never giving up on trying to take some idyllic form they can't reach and cannot bring themselves to be. Yes, I think that would be quite appealing.
Do you not find that struggle to survive the very epitome of what we are as humans? I think it's cute.

If they did, so many things would be different about the world.
For what it’s worth, I enjoy your words. Surely, that counts for something if we are counting sins.

I could listen to you talk all day and still, every word would be interesting, I think.

Am I truly that interesting? I've never thought so.

It’s very beautiful to me.

The most interesting to me are the ones that struggle.
