I wonder if it's a logical consequence. Lily wanted humans to reject the real world in favor of this one. Having broken free of those effects, we've lost any benefits as well.

so it’s a reality check, even though we can still do all the same fantastical things we can do in the game otherwise. if we were returned to reality after defeat, why still let us cast spells?

If I had to guess... either an oversight, or because none of us is that invested in casting spells. Or, it would present too obvious a contradiction in the illusion Lily wants to present. Or some combination of all three.
